Crime Prevention
Even though Beaver Dam is still considered a small city, we are seeing big city problems more frequently. Here are some tips on making you, your family and your belongings safer.SECURITY FIRST:
- DO lock up your valuables. If you don't want someone to steal it, secure it. This includes your home, car, bicycle. * Don't leave your keys in your car.
- DO keep a current description, sales receipt, serial numbers and pictures of any valuables. Place an easily identified mark on these items such as your driver's license number or social security number. This helps tremendously in the recovery.
- Don't leave things that are appealing to thieves in the open or unattended, even if they are parked in your driveway. Bikes disappear from porches, back yards, even garages.
- Don't leave your purse or wallet in a shopping cart unattended.
- Don't give out your credit card numbers, social security numbers to anyone whom you find suspicious. If you get a call from a telemarketer, DON'T give out your credit card number or social security number. Give that information out only to people you call and that you are familiar with. Your bank will never call and ask for this information.
- DO report any incident promptly to the Police. It helps to know the who-what-when-where as soon as possible.
If a wallet is stolen, there are "fraud alert" companies who instantly place a flag on the victim's name, so that anytime anyone tries to establish a charge account in the victim's name, they are denied. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE: Drinking and driving isn't just dangerous, it affects your entire life. Do you know how much an OWI ticket costs? Add in court costs and missed time from work. How about attorney's fees? Then there is insurance. Some insurance companies won't even insure you if you get an OWI conviction. With the new state laws, the blood alcohol limit allowed in your blood goes down with each conviction and the fines dramatically increase. Don't drink and drive. If you do drink, be responsible - use a designated driver.
DRUG PREVENTION/ABUSE: You've seen those commercial on television about kids and drugs. Who knows their kids the best? Parents. Talk to your children about drugs. Know where they go and who their friends are. Ask them what they are doing. Set a time for them to be home. Be involved in their lives. Educate yourself about drugs and drug abuse. (Alcohol is a drug!) If you need help or have questions, please give us a call. Prevention is the key!
If you see suspicious activity that looks like drug activity, give us a call. There are more residents in the community than there are officers. We can't be everywhere at once. Keep your eyes open!
DRIVER SAFETY INFORMATION: Accidents will happen, but most can be prevented. Below are some safety tips to keep you and your passengers safe.
- Are the roads slippery and snow covered? If you think you are going too fast, you probably are.
- If the weather is really bad, do you really need to make the trip? Safety should be first and foremost.
- Be aware of other drivers on the road. Look both ways - twice.
- Are children present? Drive slower - they are hard to see between cars.
- Is your car in good running condition? Have it properly maintained.
- Remember, having a driver's license is a privilege that can be taken away.
