Library Emergency Closing Policy

LIBRARY EMERGENCY CLOSING POLICY

At the discretion of the Library Administrator or Supervising Librarian in charge, the Library may close early, delay opening time, or be closed all day when the weather or special conditions warrant. The Beaver Dam City Hall and local radio stations WBEV & WXRO will be notified of closing. When possible, signs will be posted on the parking lot and Spring Street entrance doors.

DECISION MAKING FACTORS

  • The safety of library staff and patrons is of paramount importance
  • A sufficient number of staff members that includes a full-time Librarian must be on hand in order for the library to open or remain open.
  • Weather alerts and road condition reports factor into weather related closing decisions.
  • National Weather Service; school closing announcements; along with announcements from local, county and state government and emergency management officials will be considered, as well. Library Administration will attempt to track announcements via the television, Internet and radio taking particular note of ones regarding remaining off the roads.
  • Emergency snow closing is a judgment call and common sense prevails.
  • During tornado alerts staff and patrons are required to go downstairs to the basement to use it as a shelter.  The gate closing off the library is locked while entry doors remain open and signs are placed on doors instructing patrons to go downstairs.
