School Liaison Officers

The first School Liasion Officer position was established at the beginning of 2001 through a grant provided by the U.S. Department of Justice. This Liaison Officer works full-time, primarily between the high school and the Don Smith Learning Academy, but also serves the elementary schools and private/parochial schools when the need arises.  The second School Liasion Officer position was established at the end of 2009 through a grant provided by the Beaver Dam School District.  This Liaison Officer works full-time, primarily between the middle school and elementary schools, but can also serve the high school, Don Smith Learning Academy, and private/parochial schools when the need arises. Duties and responsibilities are:
  1. Provide early intervention to keep small problems from escalating.
  2. Divert students from the juvenile justice system when appropriate.
  3. Serve as liaison between juveniles and/or parents, service organizations, school personnel and the community.
  4. Provide information about legal matters to students, their parents and school staff.
  5. Work with school administrators on developing policies and procedures to keep schools safe.
  6. Give classroom and other presentations.
  7. Be a friend, counselor and listener to youth with personal problems.
  8. Investigate crimes where juveniles are either victims or perpetrators and enforce applicable laws.
  9. Supervise school grounds, extra-curricular school activities and school neighborhoods.
  10. Serve as positive role model to students.
  11. Share information with school administration about the conduct of students in the community.
